There is a series of six steps we all go through to enable others
to understand us. Simply put, communication is the process of
sending and receiving messages. But it is not complete until
feedback is obtained from the listener.
You must have a worthwhile message and be ready to commu-
nicate it. We have all met people who do not know what they
are talking about, yet they persist in babbling away. The
saying goes, "Donít put your mouth in motion before your mind
is in gear". Take the time to practice organizing your thoughts
before you speak. This preparation is a very important invest-
ment when you consider the high payoff you can receive. (To

their Interest, Build their Trust
Every listener asks one basic question: "Whatís in it for me?"
Speaking without regard to their needs and desires begs the
response, "So what?" To maintain their attention, you must
relate your message to your listeners' interests. You must then
gain their trust in order to persuade them. If the audience does
not have confidence in you, they will not believe what you say.
Establish this trust at the beginning of your presentation, not
at the end. The ancient Greeks knew that "no one is interested
in you until you are interested in them!" Show that you are
trying to give your audience something they want - and they
will want to hear you more!
